" Let thy blest spirit deign to dwell
Within thy church below
Make her in holiness excel
And with devotion grow"

The Chieveley Sampler Pages tell the story of Eliza Gibbons' silken sampler of Chieveley Church, worked in 1839, which was returned to Chieveley after a long absence.

In 1839 Eliza Gibbons stitched her silken sampler of Chieveley Church. Learn about Eliza and her family and the story of her sampler, as researched by its present owner and keen family historian, Mr Victor Pocock.

The Chieveley Sampler Returns Home
The sampler eventually ended up with another branch of the family after Eliza's death, and was offered to our local auctioneers Dreweatt Neat early in 1996. Discover how the sampler returned home after it was purchased by Mr Victor Pocock.

Restoration and Conservation
The sampler was sent to the Textile Conservation Centre at Hampton Court Palace to be cleaned and conserved; the work on its restoration was done by Tarja Bennett. Details of the restoration are given here.

Biblical and Religious Verses on the Chieveley Sampler
The sampler made by Eliza Gibbons contains many references to the Bible and other religious books, which are listed together with references to their sources on this page.

Eliza's Family Tree
Mr Pocock is a keen family historian and has researched Eliza's family history. I have OCR scanned this from a photocopy of a printout from his family tree software for this page.

Charts of the Chieveley Sampler
I have been able to chart the Chieveley Sampler from photographs kindly loaned to me by Mr Pocock. Charts are available for purchase so that all sampler addicts can have a chance to stitch this piece of local history. Proceeds to go to a charity nominated by Mr Pocock.

I would like to thank Mr Pocock for allowing me to reproduce his sampler and photographs.
