The Project has a professional designer/leader and is administered from Sulgrave Manor.
The team of stitchers in Phase I will consist of volunteers from both sides of the Atlantic all of whom cannot resist the challenge to "Stitch a Slip for Sulgrave"! A full response to all the Master classes will mean that in the region of 1,000 slips will be stitched, so it is dependent upon all keen stitchers taking up these classes. In return they will be given the opportunity to combine a a very special and stimulating stitching morning with a pleasant afternoon browsing round some very special places. So far stitchers have visited Sulgrave Manor on several occasions, and the American Museum in Bath, and have stitched the lovely Sulgrave Rabbit slips and some beautiful dragonflies and butterflies. More slips in the forms of fruit, flowers and feathers are currently on the drawing board.
The New Elizabethan Embroideries team have applied to the National lottery for funding, as well as seeking sponsorship from Manufacturers, suppliers, and other interested parties. Needlework magazine is working closely with the team and has already featured a number of reports on the project and has hosted a stitching weekend.
There have been early discussions with the Royal School of Needlework, as to how the School might become involved in the Project, and two of the Master Classes are being held by the Embroiderers Guild at Hampton Court in Autumn 1996. In America discussions have been held with distinguished American teachers and designers, and arrangements have now been made with the Barrani Design Studios who will be the official American contact.
